There are thousands of martial arts styles out there, here are the 5 Best Martial Arts For Self Defense to turn your body into a veritable weapon.

#1. AIKIDO

Aikido hinges on the founder’s dedication to universal peace and reconciliation. That is, to say, that this martial art is about as close as one can get to a peaceful fighting system.

This martial art is about as close as one can get to a peaceful fighting system.

Like Judo, it focuses on a combination of grabs and throws designed to both protect one from attacks and disarm and incapacitate opponents swiftly and efficiently as possible – with as little injury as conceivable sustained by all parties.

#2. Krav Maga

Krav Maga combines many martial arts forms. The first time I heard about Krav Maga, I was skeptical, partly due to the fact that I thought it was a marketing machine, an expensive art that couldn’t teach me anything I didn’t know. However, it was on the list of self-defense arts, so I decided to have a look.

Krav Maga is mostly a striking Israeli martial art created by Imi Lichtenfield for the IDF and originally had its roots in boxing, karate, and wrestling. Today, the art has been modified to include Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and various other arts. To put it simply, it’s militarized MMA.

#3. Judo

As you may know, Judo is one of the Best Martial Arts For Self Defense!! Although the focus of sports judo has changed quite a bit and strayed from judo’s core philosophy, martial art remains very dangerous.

Some of their throws are violent and can be a game-ender, especially on hard concrete in the streets.

Unlike wrestling, judo throws and trips do require a lot of practice and technique to be able to execute properly. But a season judoka (judo practitioner) will have great balance and hand-eye coordination, and be able to execute deadly throws.

#4. Kickboxing

Kickboxing incorporates a lot of martial arts and it’s more of a sport than a style of martial arts. However, for the sake of this article, let’s call it a martial art. And it’s a martial art that is taught in many MMA schools.

In kickboxing, you learn to fight with both your hands and feet. And while kickboxers may have stylistic preferences as to whether they want to predominantly kick or punch in a fight—kickboxers are capable of doing both.

However, because kickboxer spends their time learning both the kicking and punching aspect of fighting, they don’t develop the leg dexterity of karate or tae kwon do practitioners, nor do they develop the fluid upper body movement and hand dexterity of boxers.

In a street fight, I would rather know kickboxing rather than just boxing. Kickboxing is a huge advantage in a street fight as it gives you skills that most people do not possess.

#5. Combat Sambo

Combat Sambo is a military fighting form based on grappling. This is a Russian martial art based mostly on grappling.
Take note that there are three forms of Sambo, and although they mostly contain the same moves, the application and purpose of the techniques are completely different. There is:

  • Sport Sambo, aimed at competition fighting
  • Self-Defence Sambo, aimed self-defense and inflicting minimum damage to the attacker
  • Combat Sambo, which basically is the military fighting form created to inflict serious damage
