A hot summer day – sitting outside of your house, your whole forehead area is shining with sweat!
You couldn’t take the discomfort any longer & decided to went inside for some relief, but only to be hit with an even stronger heatwave because you forgot – you don’t have any AC.
But don’t you worry, you still can beat this heat without putting much efforts, so if you’re looking for some AC-free ways to avoid hot days & sleepless nights, here are 7 simple tips for staying cool!
#1. Add plants to your house
You may know house plants add beauty and value to the house, but you might not know about their economical benefits.
Plants keep house cooler in warm weather by intake of hot air for their natural processes & release of moisture into the air through the process of transpiration!
But not all plants can be allowed in house, there are some specific ones, they are- Aloe Vera, Golden pothos, Ficus tree, Snake plant, Boston fern, etc.
Research shows proper use of these plants could decrease temperature of a room by as much as 10 degrees. Plus, the moisture released by these plants helps maintain indoor humidity.
#2. Keep windows open at evening & night for cross ventilation
The nights in summer has a great breeze, you can take its benefit by keeping your windows open after sunset.
One more better way to do it is to create a cooling pressure current! Open the top section of windows on the downwind side of your house, and open the bottom section of windows on the upwind side.
You can also use a wet cloth on window to receive some cool breeze into your room!
But be cautious to get up and close the windows and blinds as soon as the sunlight hits your house. This can be as early as 5-6.
#3. Plug off electronic devices not in use
You can use the microwave or an outdoor grill while cooking your meals instead of using a stove or oven.
Your TV since it gives off a lot of heat can be a leader in making your room even hot, so avoid using it quite often!
Also, turn off all your lamps, computer or any electric stuffs when you’re not using them.
You can switch to modern LED lightnings which on one hand are efficient & effective while on other hand don’t release much heat.
#4. Close blinds or curtain during day time
Pulling curtains in particularly sunny areas of your home during the daytime can help reduce the heat build-up.
If you can afford, go for Thermal backed blinds, these are especially effective at regulating heat inside rooms prone to sun.
Doing this will really make a big difference! At the end of the day you’ll find the inside of your house is much more comfortable and at least a couple degrees cooler on the thermostat.
#5. Choose cotton or satin bed-sheets & pillow cover
Cotton or satin is the most effective piece of cloth you can go for during summers!
You can wear shirts made of it or use bed-sheets, they’re such a breathable material, you’ll never feel too sweaty using them as it helps evaporate the sweat quite easily.
It’s lightweight, more breathable than a synthetic fill, so it’s a bit better for the summer in that respect as well!
#6. Wear loose clothing
I don’t have to tell you this, wearing tight shirts or jeans can lead to a highly sweaty state in this crisp climate.
But wearing something loose, soft on body, can be way more comfortable & breathable. T-shirts or Linen & Cotton shirts can be a great option for upper clothing.
For lower clothing, chinos or trousers can be your best friend. Not anything tight or heavy but loose & comfortable!
#7. Sleep the Egyptian style
This can be a choice, means if you want to you can go for it or either leave it!
Egyptian sleeping style is all about placing a dry towel or sheet on your bed underneath your body and using a wet sheet as your blanket. The damp blanket helps keep the body cool overnight.
As I told you, if you’re not comfortable with this you can skip this point. But one thing is for sure, if you try this, you’ll feel a lot more cooler at night!
